Sweatshop Union

June 28, 2009

My favorite Underground Rap group. Sweatshop Union was the first group I was introduced to, and so appropriate as they are my favorite. They have so many awesome songs, I could listen to them all day. The beats are good, but the lyrics are even better.

Sweatshop Union is a Canadian political hip hop group made up of four solo/groups: Dirty Circus, Kyprios, Creative Minds, and Innocent Bystanders. They formed together in 2000 to make a hip hop all star team. Sweatshop Union has a lot of viewpoints that are covered over the length of their four albums. Things they sing against: American politics, mainstream hip hop, capitalism, being responsible and taking responsibility for your actions, and much more. A lot of their music is about how money isn’t important and we shouldn’t be living what I call the brain dead zombie America life, and you should just do what makes you happy. They are a lot less radical than The Coup which I wrote about earlier. Their viewpoints are just as important if not more important. They are for the simplifying of life, that people need to get over money, it’s not that important and it won’t buy happiness. Make the money you need to live, otherwise enjoy your life, you shouldn’t be slaving your entire life to build riches.

songs:

Try- Try as hard as you can, choose something you like and try it with everything you have. Don’t need a fortune, just need a place to sleep and to do what you love in life.

Thing About It– People need to think for themselves. This is the time where change comes, it takes more than singing, thinking, and debating about it. For real change to come we actually have to do something to make a change. We are destroying the world, giving everything of the world to people and companies and destroy it. There are changes that need to be made, talking about it doesn’t do anything though, we need to wake up and make some changes happen. What are you going to do to make these changes?

Pot of Stew- Is there any reason to be rich? Sweatshop Union believes that everyone should have their own pot of stew, you get the money needed for your life. The expensive cars and everything we have grown to love in capitalism is not necessary. You do what is necessary to get some money to survive, all you need is some land for you and your family and you can survive. Then once you have this it is your duty to help another get there pot of stew and live, and not get greedy.

US– We live in a democracy, we pay taxes to the government, we voted the leaders in, we make the system continue as it is. So instead of blaming President Bush or whoever in the world, all we have to look at is ourselves. “And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who’s to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you’re looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. ” -quote from V for Vendetta. We’re the ones who paid for the bombs, we built the planes that they’re on. We have to take responsibility for our actions, this is a simple thing we were taught when we were little kids, yet now as adults and a civilization we ignore and push things to the future and pretend we are the perfect angels doing nothing wrong.

Goldrush– We are all rushing to get the gold. How important is getting all the gold?

Radio Edit– If you decide to push your views aside and ride whatevers popular do it, I’ll just make music thats dissing it.
